Protecting Sensitive Telemetry for AI and Analytics

A large technology company wanted to use operational telemetry and partner data for internal AI, analytics and model improvement. Customer identifiers and other sensitive fields complicated the use of raw data.

The challenge

Useful operational data contained sensitive information

A telemetry event can include a service name, version, error code, timestamp, region, a URL and an API key. Those fields serve different purposes, and operational logs can also carry customer identifiers and partner information.

Removing fields without considering what depends on them can reduce the information available for troubleshooting, anomaly detection or model improvement. The company needed to protect sensitive values, keep useful event context and fit the environments where the data was managed. It also needed an approach privacy reviewers could assess for the intended uses.

The solution

Protection designed around telemetry utility

Protecto’s API provides detection and masking for sensitive values in telemetry, operational logs and partner data. The approach was designed to retain useful structure and context while controlling access to original values.

01

Detect and mask

Identify sensitive fields and apply the configured protection before downstream use. In an illustrative event, the URL and API key are masked while the service name and error code stay available.

02

Assess the protected data for use

Validate that the protected output retains the information the intended analytics, model-improvement or training-related workflow requires, and evaluate privacy requirements for that use.

03

Authorized recovery, when required

Authorized users or systems can recover original values when needed. Recovery sits off the main path. It is not a step before AI or analytics use.

04

Fit the deployment boundary

The requirements included partner-controlled and on-premises environments. API integration let the team consider protection within its existing data-processing workflows.

The approach

A path to protected telemetry use

Protecto gave the team a concrete approach for placing data protection between raw operational data and the AI and analytics workflows that needed it. Deployment and downstream use remain subject to the organization’s privacy and governance requirements.

What it covered

  • Mask sensitive telemetry and partner-data fields.
  • Retain the operational context required for intended downstream uses.
  • Support deployment in partner-controlled and on-premises environments.
