Protecto finds PII in structured and unstructured data, including Arabic and other languages, and swaps it for tokens your AI can still use. Real values stay with you.

An insurer builds a support assistant. An agent asks for the status of Priya Shah’s claim. Send the name to the model as is, and security won’t sign off. Replace it with “[REDACTED]”, and the assistant calls the claims system with that placeholder, finds nothing and answers “no record found”.
Nothing leaked, and the assistant is useless. Teams end up choosing between safe and useful.
Names, IDs and health details can reach a model provider. Until someone can show that they don’t, security and compliance hold the project.
It sits in tables, and also in emails, PDFs, tickets and call notes, often in more than one language. Rules written for clean columns miss it in free text.
Placeholders mean nothing to a model, so it loses track of who is who and may hallucinate. If one reaches a tool without authorized resolution, the lookup can fail.
One question, three ways to handle the name. Protecto protects the data and the assistant still finds the claim.
A support agent asks: “What’s the status of Priya Shah’s claim?”
| Approach | The model sees | The claims tool receives | What happens |
|---|---|---|---|
| No masking | “…Priya Shah’s claim?” | Priya Shah | The claim is found, and the name has reached the model provider. |
| Redaction or random tokens | “…[REDACTED]’s claim?” | [REDACTED] | The lookup finds no match. The assistant says “no record found” or hallucinates an answer. |
| Protecto | “…[PERSON_7a1]’s claim?” | Priya Shah, revealed for the approved tool and logged | The claim is found. The model only saw a token, and the agent reads the real name. |
The same person gets the same token in every message and document, and a tokenized ID keeps its format. Protecto Gateway reveals real values for authorized tool calls automatically. Without the Gateway, your application handles that step.
See this on a workflow of your own.
DeepSight, Protecto’s agentic data classifier, reads each value in context. It detects, disambiguates and verifies, so a name is told apart from a place with the same spelling.

Deploy Protecto on-premises or in your private cloud. PII passes through Protecto before it reaches a model, a search index or a tool, and you set what each receives.
On-premises · Private cloud · Air-gapped · SaaS. When Protecto runs in your environment, token mappings, keys and logs stay on your servers.
Once PII is masked, you still decide who gets real values back and need to show what happened.
Decide which agents, models and tools receive tokens and which receive real values.
Protecto Gateway reveals real values to authorized tools at the boundary, so a lookup finds the record while the model only sees tokens.
Context-Based Access Control (CBAC) decides who sees real values. Everyone else keeps seeing tokens.
See where sensitive data flows and report how your data policies were enforced.
“Protecto enabled us to deliver data security, privacy, and compliance for our AI features at scale across 5,000+ enterprise clients, strengthening customer trust in our AI automation solutions.”
PII masking replaces personal data such as names, IDs and card numbers with tokens before it reaches an AI model, search index or tool. Protecto’s tokens stay consistent and keep their format, so the AI can still work with the text while real values stay under your control.
It can, when placeholders carry no meaning and the model loses track of who is who. Consistent, format-preserving tokens keep those relationships. Why simple masking hurts accuracy.
Redaction removes the value. Masking hides it behind a substitute. Tokenization is a form of masking that uses a token you can map back to the real value when policy allows. Masking and tokenization compared.
Protecto Gateway reveals real values for authorized tool calls automatically, and the model keeps seeing tokens. Without the Gateway, your application handles that step using Protecto’s APIs.
50+ entity types across PII, PHI and PCI, plus custom entities you define. India’s PAN and Aadhaar numbers are built in. Detection covers structured fields and free text such as documents, tickets and emails.
Detection is officially tested in seven languages: English, German, French, Spanish, Dutch, Arabic and Japanese. Other languages are available on request and tested on your data.
On-premises or in your private cloud, air-gapped if you need it. A SaaS option is also available. When Protecto runs in your environment, token mappings, keys and logs stay on your servers, and external models only receive tokens.
Usually, yes. Tokenization is pseudonymization, not anonymization: while a mapping exists, a token can be linked back to a person. Your counsel decides what that means for each AI path.
Protecto is API-first. Your application calls Protecto before a model, retrieval or tool call, and again before the answer goes back.
No. DLP keeps guarding email, endpoints and file transfers. Protecto covers where it falls short: AI traffic, context and unstructured data moving to models and agents.
Bring a sample document or AI workflow, with test data if you prefer. We will show you what each model and tool receives.
